Our Story
Our story is rooted in the conviction that God's love changes lives. As we follow Jesus together, we seek to become a community marked by that same compassion, in our relationships, our neighborhoods, and beyond.
In 1974, Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village began meeting in a small storefront on Bleecker Street. For many decades, we were truly a “neighborhood” church, where most of our community lived within walking distance of our doors.
As New York City has changed over the years, so have we. Having outgrown our original storefront, we now gather for Sunday worship in Chelsea at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (315 W. 22nd Street). Yet our roots in the Village remain as vibrant as ever: our Bleecker Street space continues to host art exhibitions, jazz concerts, NYU campus ministries, prayer gatherings, and community socials. We also open our doors to two young church plants who worship there on Sundays, eager to steward what God has entrusted to us so that it may be a means of grace to others.
Today, our congregation gathers from across all five boroughs of NYC and New Jersey. In that sense, we have grown into a “city center” church—yet we remain anchored to the heart of our namesake: to love our neighborhoods and neighbors deeply, creatively, and sacrificially with the same self-giving love we have received in Christ. In a city marked by relentless pace and isolation, we intentionally choose to slow down, build an authentic spiritual family, and do life together.
At our core, we exist to know God and respond to His love by faith in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Driven not by reactionary anger or cultural anxiety, but by the same tender compassion that motivated the Incarnation. Our ultimate prayer and preferred future is to be a people fully awakened to and reflecting God’s glory on earth as it is in heaven.
We pursue this calling together by
sitting attentively at the feet of Jesus under His Word
expecting to be transformed into His likeness
sharing deeply in the life and burdens of His family
extending His compassionate, disciple-making love to our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and the world.
